The human cost of bad governance
Nigeria’s poor socio-economic performance, human rights abuses, widespread poverty, insecurity, corruption and lack of trust in the political system have led to disenchantment amongst the electorate, especially the youth who make up 51% of the 84 million registered voters.
The pursuit of good governance in Nigeria should focus on encouraging trustworthy and competent electoral candidates, committed to serving in the public’s interest. Disenchantment with the political system, especially among the rapidly growing youth population, makes the challenge increasingly urgent.
David, the great King of Israel, a man exalted by the Most High God, said in 2 Samuel chapter 23, verses 3 and 4 that: “…He that ruleth over men must be just, Ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, Even a morning without clouds; As the tender grass springing out of the earth By clear shining after rain“
It is imperative that Local Government Council, State Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate, as well as those elected as Governors and the President must be just and fair and must rule in the fear of God.
Good governance depends on building strong institutions that provide the framework for politicians to act in the public’s interest, it also depends on choosing competent and trustworthy politicians who have the strength of character to uphold the values of the institutions in the first place. Elected officials can choose to undermine institutions’ integrity for self-dealing and personal gain. When a strong institution is built, and right rulers get on board, that institution will stand and will not collapse even in the face of temporary mediocrity. The Nigerian electorate should, therefore, demand and elect political leaders who are competent and honest and who will work according to the strategy dictated to them by God. For surely righteousness exalts a nation and sin is a reproach to any people. That is the human cost of bad governance.
THE TASK IS FOR YOU AND I. Pray the following:
Lord, we pray for global integrity all over the nation, one that percolates all systems and institutions. We also pray for merit considerations in the choice of our future leaders.
We pray for an unbiased and independent electoral commission, people who are incorruptible and non partisan and who will deliver with right judgment in Jesus’name.
Now it’s time to engage the social media.
Integrity must be uppermost at every level of consideration especially when we consider that righteousness exalts a nation and sin is a reproach to any people.
